In Episode 57, Jenni Field and Chuck Gose work through four stories that, together, paint a pretty uncomfortable picture of where employee communication sits in 2026. There's a sneak peek at the IOIC's IC Index (out May 20th), a credibility report that raises more questions than it answers, a meta-analysis that challenges how organisations think about satisfaction and performance, and a Zoom article that asks whether employee frustration is actually your most valuable data.
Spoiler: it might be.

π WHAT'S IN THIS EPISODE
π IC Index 2026 β The IOIC surveyed 5,000 UK employees (not IC pros β actual employees), and the results are bleak. Change is up, clarity is down, trust in senior leadership has fallen again, and leaders keep overestimating how well they've communicated everything. Jenni and Chuck disagree on how many of the top five drivers of employee confidence IC can actually own. Jenni says two. Chuck says three. The debate is worth hearing.
π The IC Credibility Gap β Oak Engage's new report says 94% of IC teams feel respected. Only 30% can demonstrate business impact. Jenni's question: what exactly is being respected? Chuck's question: are we confusing respect for the emails with respect for the function? Anne-Marie Blake framed it perfectly β here we are in 2026, having the same conversation.
π‘ Capability, Not Happiness β A meta-analysis of 113 studies and 38,000 employees found satisfaction and performance are correlated but not causally linked. The real question isn't whether people are happy β it's whether the system allows capability to show up. Chuck makes the case with a school janitor's TikTok. It works.
π€ Employee Frustration as Data β A Zoom and Deloitte study found 94% of employees hit friction in the meeting lifecycle and lose 1.6 hours a week just preparing for meetings. The article argues that frustration is architectural signal, not noise. Chuck's take: organisations probably see it. They just don't care enough to act on it.
